Mochi is made with glutinous rice; also called sticky rice, a type of Asian rice that is especially sticky when cooked. All are made using glutinous rice, pounded or ground into a paste or powder, molded into shapes, and cooked again to create different confections. This traditional ways of mochi making roughly takes 5~6 hours.

Another similar to mochi products which is also made of glutinous rice flour, is called Nian Gao, such as Taiwanese sweet cake(tinn-ké) and Korean rice cake(Tteokguk).
